Racing through Rome

On Thursday we went to Rome. We got up early in the morning (5am) so we could take a 6:40 am train. Unfortunately, Eleanor's ticket got eaten by the machine. I went to get help and used a little Italian, "Buon guorno, mi scusi, parla inglese? Mi amico's ticket stuck" with some hand gestures. I was then directed to someone else who tried to help but essentially said we broke her machine. We quickly bought a replacement ticket and got on the train. Of course, this train ride did not even check tickets but it is better to be honest than get in trouble with the Italian police.

We got to Rome where we navigated the metro to get to the Vatican. It was easy to get to the Vatican from the station because there were tons of people selling fast track tickets and guided tours. Unfortunately, there was a long line to wait in where we got berated for a while by people trying to convince us to buy fast track tickets. Luckily, the line moved quickly and we got in within an hour.

We chose to go to the museum. It has amazing frescoes, statues, and architecture. The big problem is that you are forced through the museum with tons of other people so it is really crowded and quite overwhelming. It is still a very cool place but not relaxing. At the end, the last stop is the Sistine Chapel. We had recently studied it in art class so it was cool to see in person. By the time we finished it was after lunchtime so we got some pizza at the museum. It was delicious and helped us through the afternoon. Afterwards, we walked to St. Peter's. The line was horribly long so we took a few pictures and moved on.

Halloween
From there, we walked to the Pantheon. I was kinda underwhelmed by it but next we went to the Trevi fountain! It was exactly how I imagined it (except way more tourists)! From there, we walked to past the forum to the Coliseum. The ruins are amazing and everything is so large! We did not have much time so we only saw it from the outside. From there, we took the Metro back to the train station, grabbed dinner for the train, and came back to Firenze. On the way home we got gelato (I got a hazelnut one) and it was delicious! On our walk home we saw lots of people dressed up for Halloween so that was a little surprising!

Overall, Rome is a spectacular city that requires at least a week to see properly but that is a good excuse to go back in the future! We managed to see the highlights in one day so that was very cool but uber exhausting!
