This morning, I had my Irish lit class and we discussed the play "Playboy of the Western World" and various poems by Yeats. After class, we walked to Tate Britain. The walk is nice and takes us by Trafalgar Square (St. Martens in the Fields, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery), down Whitehall past the war memorials (fitting on 11/11), the horse guards, Downing street, the London Eye, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Parliament Square, Westminster, and a scenic walk on the Thames.
Tate Britain focuses on British artists, surprise, surprise. Overall, I really liked it but there were WAY too many Turner's (over 150 oil paintings), it was ridiculous! Here are some of the pieces that stood out.
The Cholmondeley Ladies (1600-1610) |
William Hogarth (1748)- known for his satire prints- we studied his prints in history and saw them in Keats house. |
Martin (1851-3)- this was really pretty in person. |
Waterhouse (1888)- one of the earliest realistic paintings we saw |
Egg (1858)- part of a three part series with a woman who committed adultery. |
'Stack'- weird stack of garbage |
Gertler (1916)- peculiar but cool carousel with a weird sense of space. |
Bridget Riley- this painting is really trippy and weird in real life. |
Anya Gallaccio- Gerberas that were alive but are now molding and gray. |
Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose- My favorite painting in the entire museum-it was amazing and really beautiful. The light is perfect in the painting! So impressive! |
In the evening, Kate and I wanted to make dessert. I wanted to make oatmeal carmelitas, but they do not have brown sugar so I needed a replacement but we do not have molasses either. It also needs caramel but the replacement for that requires brown sugar...it's a brutal never ending cycle. Kate and I ended up buying cocoa and sugar and made brownies from scratch. They were super delicious and a success!
